CHARTER ANGLER OF THE MONTH

Cobia look a lot like a cross between a shark and the remoras that catch a free ride on the backs and bellies of sharks. Cobia aren't real smart and will practically look you in the eye and then eat the bait attached to your eye as if nothing's amiss. But beware. That docile look masks a fierce fighter. Play him out for a long time in the water. He'll wreak havoc in the cockpit and you'll wish you never caught him if you bring him aboard green. Prime time for cobia is late March, April and early May is the best time to seek these shark look-alikes in the Gulf area. In the lower latitudes, where the water is warmer, fish for them December through March. Cobia seem to prefer jigs, a fun way to fish using a lead-headed lure that's casually tugged through the water near the fish. In the Keys, a live grunt the size of your palm is the cobia's choice snack.
