Reports for the week of July 29th through August the 2nd
On Wednesday I took out some clients from Georgia. It was a
late pick up so I was able to fish a little before taking them out. I
had a very good two hours of fishing before they arrived. I caught 5
snook altogether, two 15lbs,one 12, one 7 and one 4 pounds. When they
arrived we headed out to a spot that I haven't visited recenty. The
first bait I put on little Clayson's rod was gobbled up before I could
even hand it to him. Over the next hour they caught a good 15 to 20
fish. They managed several snook, about 7 mangrove snapper for dinner,
and a jack. We started to run out of bait so I headed to the same
marker I caught it at earlier. After 4 or 5 casts we had enough to go
fishing again.
Next we went over to a flat that we have been doing well at
lately. I chummed with some of our live bait and we managed to get
a little bite going. Clayson caught another Snook and the rest of the
gang put a Redfish, Snook, Trout and squid shark in the boat. We
managed a slam for the day.I had a good time with the boys from Georgia
and I believe they had a good one with me as well.
The next day I went out with Captain Butch Rickey and Captain
Butch Botelor. We pretty much ran a copy cat day of the day before. Our
water has been so dirty and polluted because swifmud has been dumping
millions of gallons of fresh water into our river from lake okechobee.
The water in the river is pure fresh and the sound is only brackish at
best. I hate when they try to fix mother nature. We fished our snook
hole for about 2 hours with not even one bite. Funny, the day before I
had wore them out at the same spot by myself and now with 3 captains on
the boat we could not buy a bite. We must have scared them to death
with are knowledge and prestige. We fished the whole day and the best
fish we put in the boat was and 8 pound Snook by Butch Botelor. I
didn't put a fish in the boat. Oh well here's to better fishing next
time.
Finally, the last trip of the week. I was invited by Rick from
Tween waters to fish some of his offshore spots. I was a little late
meeting him at his house because I stopped and got some bait before
heading on over there. We left out and on the way out of Redfish Pass
we saw a funnel cloud out about 10 miles away from us. We watched it
for 10 minutes or so until we could judge which direction it was
heading in. We arrived out the first rock pile and in no time I had put
a nice Mangrove Snapper in the boat. That was it for me for the rest
of the day but not for Rick. He really started putting the fish in the
boat. He caught about a 6lb. mangrove snapper along with a 7 or 8 pound
Black Grouper. He then caught 8 or 9 more short gag, black, and red
grouper over the next 30 minutes. We then looked off into the Gulf and
saw two more funnel clouds. They lasted for a long time and it looked
like the thunderstorms were going to surround us so we decided to head
for shelter before we became part of a funnel cloud.
To conclude, fishing was decent this week. At times we were
putting some extra large fish in the well and the bite was strong. Yet
other times we were working our buts off with no success at all. Next
week the tides are good and I am looking forward to a strong bit. If
you are urning for some rod busting leader fraying excitement then give
