Adrienne and Mike from Jersey were my customers for this report. Mike was quiet and laid back but really got excited when he was able to view the beauty of our environment here in SW florida first hand. His wife Adrienne was my kind of tart. She is self sufficient, wants to prove she can do things her way, and is very competitive. Another words she always slaps Mike around when it comes to who catches the biggest and most fish.
We started the day off looking for bait at the Causeway. Bait was nearly non existent and after two throws and only 8 or so bait to show for it, I put the net away. Right about that time the Spainish Macks just started blistering baits all over the place. I handed Mike and Adrienne rods with a new lure I had one from an infomercial I filmed the day before called Zips. They began casting the Zips all over the place. The next thing we knew Mike was hooked up and eventually landed a nice 2 foot long Mack. For the next 20 minutes both of them had several opportunity's to land another one but it never materialized.
Next, we went over to a marker and eventually loaded the well with a hundred whitebait or so. Off we went up the river to find some of the big jacks I have been hearing about terrorizing the local glass minnow population. We managed to hook up with a few and Mike landed a nice 6 pound Canal Tuna that he said was the best fight of his life. We never really found the big schools we were looking for so off we went back down the river. After trying several spots we decided it was time to grab a bite to eat at the Waterfront Restaurant in ST. James City. Mike and Adrienne just beamed about the food and hospitality when we left. They told me on more than one occaision that going there was a great suggestion. I told them I take all my clients there for lunch on a 3/4 or full day trip.
Even though, Adrienne was loosing the battle of largest and most fish she still had room to talk smack. Well I thought to myself it is time to fix her good, once and for all. She had talked about how big of a fish she wanted to catch at the begining of the day and how she could smack any fish she tangled with around. I told her I would take her to a place where she better hold onto my Cape Fear rod and Fin Nor reel and not let it or her get jerked in the water. She laughed and said something to the order of "no fish can jerk a rod out of my hands." I emphasized: do not let my rod get jerked out of your hands. I put a pinfish on her 2/0 Eagle Claw Nickel Plated live bait hook. I tossed her bait to the structure and with in 5 seconds the rod was nearly jerked right out of her hands. Now she knew I meant business. I tossed Mike's bait to the structure and it got wacked as well. He missed his fish to. After 10 minutes of loosing a bait every other cast Mike finally showed one of the grouper who the boss was. He was able to clear the structure and land his first grouper ever. He could not believe how hard the fish hit. He swore it was a lot heavier than what ended up on his line. These inshore grouper hit like a ton of bricks. They can simply dominate you if they want to.
Finally, Adrienne had her chance at some big boys. I tossed her pinfish to the structure and it would get annililated almost instantly. Adrienne turned from cocky to "what have I got myself into." I tossed her bait into the pit over and over and she got wrecked over and over. I enjoyed the severe thrashing she was taking at first but eventually I began to feel sorry for her. She wanted to catch one of those things so bad she could taste it. So, we kept trying. On one occasion, I tossed her bait to the structure. Adrienne stood there perched and ready for the strike. The next thing I know her arms and Cape Fear rod were extended straight out and shaking. The first thing she said after ti broke her off was "Man that fish Rattled My Bones That was the first time I have ever heard that term in a fishing situation. I tied her on a new Team Fish leader and she was back at it again. Mike hooked up with another fish and managed to pull it all the way through the underground structure. His Fins braided line just pulled that fish right on out of that labrynth of snags and abraisions. He knew he would have gotten it without the Fins line. Meanwhile Adrienne hooks up with a nice grouper. She pulls hard to remove the fish from it's surroundings. The grouper wasn't about to quit though and ran her back into the structure. She began to walk down the side of the boat and literally drag the grouper away from the structure. When she finally managed to land it, she had a smile on her face from ear to ear. That is itself makes it worth being a captain.
To conclude, fishing started of slow but finished with a remarkable BANG!! Each day it seems as if more and more fish are showing up. Be sure to hurry up and book because all of my days for the next 3 months are nearly gone. Book Now if you can!
